This month, the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Georgia is joining forces with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to put on a week-long campaign aimed at educating workers in the construction industry about workplace safety during the winter.
What does it involve?
Employers interested in participating in the stand down must first register with the AGC. OSHA and the ACG then provide training materials to construction project managers on designated work safety topics. During the week of the campaign, employers halt work for part of the day in order to pass this training on to their workers. Subjects include:
- How to prevent cold weather injuries
- Best workplace practices in winter weather
- How to deal with winter-related work hazards
- How to identify symptoms of cold stress and conduct first aid
- What kind of protective clothing to wear in severely cold, wet or windy conditions
In the construction industry, slip and fall accidents are a primary cause of workplace fatalities. During the icy winter months, instances of such injuries spike. OSHA and the AGC are encouraging employers in construction to take proactive measures against this worrying trend.
What is the impact?
Construction safety stand-downs have been gaining momentum in recent years. Nearly a quarter of a million employees in Georgia construction sites have participated in the program to date–and many more across the country. The purpose is to raise employer and employee consciousness about workplace hazards and to foster open communication and education to help prevent unnecessary injuries.
