Five conditions that can lead to outdoor slip and fall injuries

On Behalf of | Oct 27, 2017 | Uncategorized

Slip and fall accidents are of the most common forms of personal injury. They can occur anywhere, at any time, and can be caused by many different conditions.

The area where a slip and fall accident occurs plays an important part in liability. Depending on the premises where an injury occurs, the property owner could be held legally responsible. This is particularly true if the conditions of the property could have contributed to the incident. Take a look at some common outdoor conditions that can lead to slip and falls:

Under Georgia law, a property owner is under a duty to exercise ordinary care in keeping the premises and approaches safe.

  • Uneven surfaces

Particularly in highly-trafficked areas like parking lots and sidewalks, cracks, holes, and uneven surfaces can prove hazardous if someone should slip and fall. Property owners are generally responsible for fixing uneven surfaces on their premises to prevent injury.

  • Insufficient lighting

Slip and falls can also occur in areas that do not have enough lighting. Nearly any spot can become dangerous if it is so dark that visibility is an issue. Stairs, sidewalks, curbs, and yards are just a few examples.

  • Parking lots and sidewalks

Since parking lots and sidewalks are heavily used, they have the potential to be the sites of slip and fall accidents. Property owners could be considered at fault if they have not adequately maintained the parking lots and sidewalks on their businesses or private property.

  • Snow and ice

Snow and ice may not be much of a problem here in the South, but they can still occur. And if you are in other parts of the country, they can be a huge issue. Freezing conditions can make property slippery and difficult to navigate, sometimes resulting in serious injuries.

  • Hidden Dangers

Rotten boards on deck that cannot be seen or, other similarly hidden dangers known only to the property owner, are responsible for many serious injuries every year.  The property owner must fix the danger or warn visitors of the hidden danger.

Slip and fall accidents can occur in nearly any condition or location. Anyone who has suffered an injury as a result of a slip and fall may be entitled to legal compensation and should consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
