Motorcycle safety tips

On Behalf of | May 31, 2017 | Uncategorized

While the hardy may ride their motorcycles on warm days in the winter months here in Georgia, most find it enjoyable to wait until the trees start to turn green. Unfortunately, no matter what time of year it is, danger still lurks on the road because of inattentive drivers and poor road conditions. This can lead to time in the hospital or worse.

While motorcyclist can’t control the behavior of fellow drivers, nor completely prevent accidents, they can take precautions to lessen the dangers of riding a bike. These include:

Wear a helmet: This piece of safety equipment protects one of the most important parts of your body, and does it well. Only 19 of the 50 states have laws requiring motorcyclists to wear a helmet, but Georgia is one of them.

Protect your eyes: Make sure that helmet has a face shield or wear proper eyewear.

Avoid blind spots: Motorcycles have a fairly small footprint on the road and can be hard for drivers of cars and trucks to see, particularly if you are sitting in one of their blind spots. A rule of thumb is that you should be able to see a driver either in a mirror or through a window.

Drive defensively: A motorcycle is faster and more maneuverable than most cars, but you do not need to drive it that way. Follow the traffic laws and drive defensively as if other drivers do not see you and will not yield to you.

Take a class: The state offers different motorcycle safety courses for riders of all levels. Learn more here.

While severe injuries are typical in motorcycle accidents, minor injuries do happen. If the latter is the case, it’s still advisable to seek medical treatment to document the injuries if these were caused by the negligence of another driver or poor road maintenance by a city, county or state.

It’s certainly advisable to seek the advice of an attorney experienced in motorcycle accidents if the injuries are more severe. Medical bills, lost wages and even major injuries mean a large amount of lost money and earning potential for a victim. An attorney can help insure that your rights are protected and that you receive adequate compensation after your accident.
